March 20, 2008

Exodus To Jazz proudly presents The Helen Sung Quartet on Friday, March 28, 2008 at the Clarion Riverside Hotel. A rapidly emerging pianist garnering international acclaim, Helen Sung returns to Rochester (she accompanied Denise Thimes, Dec. 15, 2007) to lead a dynamic combo of young “Jazz Titans” comprised of bassist Richie Goods, saxophonist Marcus Strickland and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.

Artist Highlights:

Helen Sung’s jazz career began in 1995 as a member of the New England Conservatory of Music’s inaugural class of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance. One of just seven students accepted that year, she studied with great jazz masters including Clark Terry, Wynton Marsalis, The Heath Brothers, Jackie McLean, James Moody, Ron Carter, Lewis Nash, Curtis Fuller, Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Helen has performed professionally with Clark Terry, Steve Turre, Wayne Shorter, Regina Carter and The Mingus Big Band.

Richie Goods attended Boston's Berklee College of Music and studied under bass greats Ron Carter and Ray Brown upon graduation. He has performed with Milt Jackson, Brian McKnight, Stanley Turrentine, Mulgrew Miller, Don Braden, Vincent Herring, Vanessa Rubin, Russell Malone, Antonio Hart and Lewis Hayes. Rich is the youngest musician to be inducted into the Pittsburgh Jazz Hall of Fame.

Marcus Strickland , named 'Best New Artist' in JazzTimes Magazine's Reader's Poll '06, exhibits a strong, malleable tone and well-contoured improvisations. He has performed with Nicholas Payton, Dave Douglas, Jeff 'Tain' Watts and Tom Harrell and big bands of The Carnegie Hall, Charles Mingus, the Village Vanguard, Milt Jackson, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Reggie Workman.

Ulysses Owens Jr., winner of DownBeat’s 24th Annual Student Music Award, excited Rochester jazz lovers during Mulgrew Miller’s ETJ engagement on November 3, 2007. He embraces improvisational percussion while maintaining the combo’s rhythmic center. Ulysses has performed with the finest musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, Kenny Barron, Regina Carter and Mulgrew Miller.
