THE GABRIEL ALEGRIA AFRO-PERUVIAN SEXTET

Gabriel Alegria (www.gabrielalegria.com) is one of the most influential figures on the jazz scene in Peru. He is developing a unique Afro-Peruvian jazz concept that combines the roots of American jazz and Afro-Peruvian music of the coast of Peru. This development is being compared to the infusion into jazz of Brazilian and Cuban music.

Gabriel's latest recording- “Nuevo Mundo” - features collaborations of acclaimed Tierney Sutton, Bobby Shew, Russell Ferrante and Bill Watrous with fellow Peruvian artists: Freddy 'Huevito' Lobaton, Hugo Alcazar, Laurandrea Leguia, Jocho Velazquez and Joscha Oetz.

The recording was inspired by life along the culturally rich Peruvian coast.

In 2000 Gabriel founded Jazz Peru Internacional (JPI), Peru's premier jazz arts and cultural exchange organization. Gabriel holds a doctorate degree in jazz studies from the University of Southern California, a master's degree from the City University of New York and a bachelor's degree from Kenyon College.
